PRO ELIT UPSR English Paper Format and Tips

Familiarity with the examination format is a prerequisite for doing well in the examination. It reduces uncertainty for the students so that they can navigate confidently through the paper without wasting precious time processing the unexpected. The UPSR English examination paper is divided into two papers.

Paper 1 - Comprehension (Pemahaman)

Duration: 1 hour 15 minutes

Total Marks: 50 marks

Areas of Emphasis: Grammar, Vocabulary and Reading Skills

Section A (20 marks)

- Multiple Choice Questions

- 20 questions, 1 mark each

- TIPS: Read all of the given answers before making your final selection. Skip difficult questions first but remember to return to them at the end. Even if you have to guess the answer, do not leave any questions unanswered.

Section B (30 marks)

- Objective (Tick the correct answer/Match the correct phrases) and Limited Response Questions (Short answers)

- 5 questions, questions may be broken down into sub-questions

- Mark allocation varies depending on the question but generally 2 marks for each correct answer provided

- TIPS: Make sure your handwriting is clear. Always refer back to the provided text for clues.

Paper 2 - Writing (Penulisan)

Duration: 1 hour 15 minutes

Total Marks: 50 marks

Areas of Emphasis: Writing Skills demonstrating Creativity in Language Use, Language Application and Appreciation, and Information Transfer

Section A (10 marks)

- Information Transfer (Subjective)

- From Linear Text to Non-Linear Text or vice versa

- A variety of texts may be used ranging from letters, brochures to dialogues

-TIPS: You may need to use simple punctuation (like a comma), conjunctions and/or prepositions to enable the final text to make sense when information is transferred to complete it.

Section B (15 marks)

- Part 1 (3 marks): Writing - Providing a list of opinions (on suggestions, ideas, reasons, comments, etc.) based on given stimuli

- Part 2 (12 marks): Guided Writing - 50-80 words writing in a paragraph form. Information to guide writing is provided but analysis, description and elaboration of the given information must be demonstrated to produce a solid answer.

Section C (25 marks)

- Guided Writing (Story) - Students required to answer only ONE question from a choice of two questions

- Paragraph form - 80-100 words

- Questions may refer to information presented as a composite picture with helping words OR a series of pictures with helping words OR descriptions with helping words

-TIPS: Composite pictures usually depict the climax of the story. Selecting questions with a composite picture provides you with more flexibility in your story, allowing you to easily show your creativity in composing a story. However, if you are not able to effectively compose a story, choose questions with a series of pictures that will guide you through the events of the story. You will still have the opportunity to be creative in composing the different sections of the story.
